Build Your Personal Board of Advisors — Even if You’re Not a CEO

I often talk with executives in transition who ask: “Who should I be talking to right now?”

Having a personal board gives you guidance, perspective, and a trusted sounding board — and it’s something every professional can and should build. Here’s a simple way to think about creating yours:

  • Diversify perspectives – Seek people who see things differently. Their questions will challenge and stretch you.

  • Define roles – A strategist, an operator, a mentor, a peer. Each brings a unique lens.

  • Invest in relationships – Who haven’t you spoken to in a while? Reach out, Stay connected, share updates, and ask for honest feedback.

  • Use it as a 360 – They see how you lead, communicate, and grow — and often become your best references.

Your title doesn’t earn you the board. Your curiosity does.

Who’s on your personal board — and who’s missing? 📝
